Laura Edie: Parliamentary Candidate for Dartford

Born and brought up in Dartford, Laura joined the Green Party in 2021, leaving the Labour Party as she felt that they were not offering strong enough policies on environmental and social issues. Laura has been a councillor in Newtown since 2019, and in 2023 stood in the May Local Elections as a Green Party representative for her ward, winning her seat again to stand as Dartford’s first Green Party councillor.

Since then, Laura has worked hard for Dartford borough, including proposals for reduction of glyphosate chemicals used for weed management, supporting local housing needs, and fighting for the protection of green spaces including Swanscombe Peninsula; she was instrumental in setting up the successful grassroots campaign Save Swanscombe Peninsula. She recently founded the Dartford Care Backpacks initiative and has also run a community safety group for several years. She has a Jewish heritage, and has been deeply troubled by the conflict, and the loss of Palestinian lives in Gaza, working with others to hold a vigil to bringing together people from all communities to reject hate, promote peace, and call for an immediate and lasting ceasefire.

Laura sees standing for the Green Party as the only way to create a fairer, greener, and more socially just society.

Rebecca Drake Hopkins: Parliamentary Candidate for Gravesham

Rebecca has lived in the Gravesham area since 2015. She has been a Green Party member since 2010, originally being inspired to join the party by Caroline Lucas standing as an MP in the 2010 General Election. She has always had a strong interest in environmental issues and preservation of nature, and feels that the Green Party offers the best policies for the environmental and societal changes that are so strongly needed to tackle pollution, risks to human and environmental health, and systematic inequality.

Rebecca has an active interest in local conservation and maintenance; she is a Gravesham Street Champion and regularly organizes litter picks in the local area. She also supports social equality, and is a founding organizer of the Dartford Care Backpacks initiative.

Rebecca is standing because she supports change for a fairer and greener future for everyone.

Read more: the Green Party manifesto is now out!

In its 2024 General Election manifesto, the Green Party has pledged to raise taxes for the wealthiest in society, including polluters, and bring utility services, especially water, back into public ownership. If elected, green MPs will push for an increase in investment in public services, including the NHS, with fair pay for nurses, doctors, and other NHS staff, and ensuring that everyone has access to health and dental care. The party will also push for changes to housing to protect renter’s rights, and get more social housing provided.

The Green Party manifesto states that the environment is our most precious resource. We are part of nature, and unless it flourishes, we can't either. Our policies on environmental protection and preservation are to preserve natural habitats, so that wildlife are supported to thrive. By returning water companies to public ownership, we can also make sure that money goes back into fixing water infrastructure, protecting water drinking quality, and our waterways.

At the Green Party, we believe a fairer, greener world is possible, and we believe that it is worth fighting for!
